Tribute to Ted Hutchings

This is not your typical blog; instead, it is a tribute to a colleague and friend. On February 5, 2026, Ted Hutchings tragically passed away in a car accident. His loss deeply affected numerous people in our central Alberta communities, as Ted had touched the lives of many, both young and old.

A few months back, I reached out to Ted to see if he would be interested in being a guest on our "Be Authentic" podcast. He was quick to accept and expressed that he would be honored to join something that supports emotional and mental well-being. That was Ted... always wanting to help others out. After a brief chat, we ended the call. I mentioned that I would contact him around late January or early February since we were launching the Authentic Self-Compassion website in mid-January. Sadly, Ted passed away before we could arrange an interview.

What I realized from this experience is that we should never take anything for granted. Although we all understand this, we often become so busy with our lives that time passes by unnoticed. We often delay or neglect to express our appreciation to others. I challenge everyone reading this:

  1. Spend 5 minutes today to call a family member or friend and let them know how much they matter to you.

  2. Perform a kind act for a stranger (even a simple smile and "hello" can make a difference).

  3. Take a brief moment for yourself (even just 35-40 seconds), listen to your favorite song (music is soothing) or take a walk and be mindful (observe the small details).

If you have any regrets in life, don't be too hard on yourself. Don't allow them to weigh you down. Life really is too short, engage in activities that bring you joy! Laugh often and love wholeheartedly!

Regrettably, Ted will not be joining us on our "Be Authentic" Podcast, but I want you to have the chance to discover for yourself the genuine person he was. He will be missed by many!
